An interesting walk with many variations - ideal if you think you want to walk 11 miles but aren't sure you'll make it, as there are many short cuts. NB You don't have to start from point 1 - there are many car parks on the route

  • Distance up to 15.2 kilometres, depending on how you feel
  • Terrain - made paths by reservoirs, level, some roadwalking
  • Map OS Outdoor Leisure West Pennine Moors
  • Refreshments -The Black Bull at Turton and the Strawberry Duck at Egerton both should be open all day, all year for drinks and meals
  • Car parking - There are 2 car parks very close to my start, but also at Jumbles Reservoir,
  • Public Transport - Edgworth Station is actually on the route at 725177
  • There are at least two Caches near this route - 'At Turtons Beck and Fall' and 'Fairy Battery'

1 - 722172 Find the exit at the far east corner of the car park and take the the path through the woods, which soon bring you to the side of the stream and under the railway viaduct. The valley opens out into the reservoir and a bridge to the left offers a short cut for those wanting a very short walk. Carry on alongside the reservoir to the end, where the path over the dam offers another short cut
(if the car park is full, there is another at the end of the track at 720172

2 - 734162 go through the gate on the right and take the track up to the road. Turn left to go through the picturesque village of Chapeltown, staying on the road through the village until you see the footpath sign on the left. (If you don't see the footpath sign, you should certainly see the pillbox). This path takes you over the field and down to the top end of Jumbles Reservoir.

3 - 736148 The bridge to the left offers another short cut, but if you are doing the full distance bear right through the field alongside the reservoir. After a while, the path joins a tarmac road, and shortly after this, you take the bridge on the left hand side of the road. This takes you past the Sailing Club and then eventually through a stable yard (Please do not feed the Horses !), and out onto a surfaced road. Shortly after the large house on the left (the one with the razor wire) there is a path you can take - however it is difficult to find and steep and muddy at the far end, so I recommend you carry on down the lane until the path off to the left (just by the speed bumps). This path drops down into the valley below the reservoir dam, which is currently being managed to allow the growth of native woodland. Cross the stream and take the path up the far side of the reservoir, which takes you up to the Jumbles Park Information Centre. (The car park here would provide an alternative starting point). Take the path in front of the information centre, which takes you along the reservoir and then into an interesting steep sided valley. This eventually brings you out into a small 'estate' of modern houses - take the cobbled track to the left, then the footpath to the right just after 'The Coach House'. At The end of this path take the track to the left which takes you to the road, and go right, uphill, until you reach the Black Bull.

4 -738162 The path leaves the road and goes through the Black Bull car park, and takes you to the dam at the end of Wayoh Reservoir. Take the stepped path on the right, first through field and then woods at the side of the shore.

5 - 733173 Go straight across where the minor road crosses the path, following the path round the 'bay'. After crossing 2 footbridges in quick succession, take the path that goes up the hill just to the side of the bench. This leads through some trees to a field, and where you join the minor road, turn right. This takes you to Edgworth Station, and you could probably do the walk starting and finishing here if you wanted to travel by public transport. Just before the station, go left over the railway and left again round the front of the Strawberry Duck. Follow the path with the row of houses on your left and fields on the right. Where the path starts to go downhill and forks, take the right fork past the camping barn and join the track which take you to -

6 - 724173 the minor road at the end of the reservoir dam. If you want to get home, just cross the dam, otherwise take the path to the right. This last part of the walk is a simple stroll round Turton link to cachereservoir and is almost perfectly flat all the way round, until you get back to the other side of the dam having walked full circle !

ps - if you're still feeling fit near the end of the journey, before turning back SE from the top end of Turton Reservoir, take a diversion up Yarndale to watch the climbers on Cadshaw Crags link to cache(or Fairy Battery as it marked on the map)
