Styhead

Quite (by my standards) a strenuous one, this - but worth it for the views on a good day

  • Distance 9.1k, 535 m ascent
  • Terrain - mostly well trodden rocky paths
  • Refreshments - whatever is on your rucksack
  • Parking - there is room to park on the road down to Seathwaite, but get there early !

OS_OLM_040 Requires OS Outdoor Leisure Map 4 - Lake District North West - buy it here

Having parked somewhere on the lane to Seathwaite, walk through the farmyard and follow the well trodden path along the beck, crossing over it at Stockley Bridge. On the far side of the bridge, go through the gate and take the path straight in front of you (not the one on the left)

This is the most strenuous part of the walk - but when you pass the large boulder on the left of the path, your at about 1000 ft. The valley between Seathwaite Fell and Green Gable levels out, the path becomes less distinct, and after a while crosses over Sourmilk Gill. Carry on past Styhead Tarn, and you eventually come to a path junction and the conspicuous Mountain Rescue Stretcher box

Although it is a small deviation from our route, carry straight on past the stretcher box for a few hundred yards, for, weather permitting, a view down into Wasdale and the Irish Sea

Then head back for the stretcher box and take the path to the right, which climbs again levelling out at about 600m, with Great End looming above on your right and Sprinkling Tarn on the left. A few hundred meters after the Tarn you meet Ruddy Gill on the left hand side of the path, and cross over it , to take the path below Allen Crags down to Grains Gill

This eventually takes you back to Stockley Bridge and then down back to Seathwaite
