BISTORT - a perennial flower with upright unbranched stems and oval, almost triangular leaves. Found in hay meadows, June to August and common in the Pennines

BITTERSWEET - a woody perennial with purple and yellow flowers and red berries flowering May to September, it is a member of the nightshade family and the berry is POISONOUS

 

DRY VALLEY a valley without a river, common in limestone areas, where the river has been diverted underground

FOOT AND MOUTH - contagious viral disease of almost all cloven footed animals, it is endemic in Asia, Africa and South America

 

GOIT or Goyt - a waterway (as in River Goyt) from the old english, GOTA

KESTREL - Britain's commonest bird of prey, frequently seen hovering in search of prey. The outline of its long wings and tail are distinctive. 32-35cm

KINGFISHER - breeds in holes by or near fresh water, a beautiful bird often seen only as a quick moving blue flash

 

LIMESTONE PAVEMENT - area of limestone that has been scoured of soil by glaciers, allowing rainwater to open up fissures known as grykes between the blocks of rock ('clints')

Moschatel - a low growing, musky smelling, woodland plant also called 'Town Hall Clock' because of the shape of its flower
